Built with History

Nestled within the tranquil landscapes of the Peak District, Alder Barn Retreat stands as a testament to centuries of rich history and thoughtful restoration. Originally part of Pethills Farm, the barn was one of three structures, two of which succumbed to decay over the decades. Fortunately, Alder Barn was partially restored in 1998, with significant renovations culminating in its current form by 2025. The land itself bears traces of ancient human activity, evidenced by discoveries of Bronze Age artifacts such as spearheads, axes, and arm rings, suggesting it may have been a site of settlement or ritual offerings.

It was perfect.

We booked a last minute getaway for the half term break with our children, and it was a great success. We couldn't be happier with how this week turned out for us, thanks to our stay at Alder barn.
The house is a renovated barn and it has been decorated with great taste and with the rest & relaxation of guests in mind. It is spacious, comfortable and incredibly cozy. Sarah is a great host and clearly had thought of every detail to make us feel incredibly welcome.
The area is stunning. The barn is surrounded by farms with loads of animals, great for walking around with kids. We actually had pretty bad weather but it really didn't bother us as we were so comfortable there.
We planned to stay four nights but decided to extend for one more night as we were loving it.
I would 100% recommend you book this place if you want a restful break from the business of everyday life and want to recharge batteries.
We will definitely come back again.

A perfect countryside escape.

We stayed at this beautifully converted detached barn and couldn’t have been more impressed. Tucked away in the middle of the countryside, it’s wonderfully private and peaceful – the perfect place to switch off and relax. The barn is finished to a high standard, with lovely touches throughout and underfloor heating that kept it warm and cosy.

The bedrooms were a real highlight – the Super King beds were incredibly comfortable, making it hard to get up in the morning! Everything about the place felt calm, spacious, and well thought out. A proper hidden gem – we’ll definitely be back.
